Independence Day Lesson

In commemoration of the 112th Independence Day last June 12, I started to teach the kids the country's national anthem (Lupang Hinirang) and oath of allegiance (Panatang Makabayan).

Boy, was I surprised to find out that there's an updated version of the "Panatang Makabayan!" When did that happen? (Wikipedia says it was revised in 2001) So for those who still say our nation's oath in the old, sing-song way (like I do), here's the updated version:

PANATANG MAKABAYAN
Iniibig ko ang Pilipinas,
aking lupang sinilangan,
tahanan ng aking lahi;
kinukupkop ako at tinutulungan
maging malakas, masipag, at marangal.
Dahil mahal ko ang Pilipinas,
diringgin ko ang payo ng aking mga magulang,
susundin ko ang tuntunin ng paaralan,
tutuparin ko ang tungkulin ng mamamayang makabayan;
naglilingkod, nag-aaral, at nagdarasal
nang buong katapatan.
Iaalay ko ang aking buhay, pangarap, pagsisikap
sa bansang Pilipinas.

Thankfully, my kids know the national anthem, though Joaquin and Jaime are more familiar with it as the song played before a movie starts :) I was pleased to find that the Civics textbook I bought for Gaby contained a CD with interactive games and activities, including a karaoke version of "Lupang Hinirang." The book is One Country, One People Grade 1, and Vibal Publishing uploaded some of the interactive CD's contents on their website.
